Ning 3.0

1 (released March 12, 2014)

There is no need to recreate any existing feature or content item. During the upgrade process, existing content will be imported into new feature instances. In the later phases, we plan to provide additional tools that will make possible to map content from your 2.0 to a particular place on your 3.0 Network, but it will always be simpler if you refrain from duplicating content like blog posts and discussions.

On an administrative side, networks must be in good standing (no overdue bills) and for 2.0 Networks being migrated to existing 3.0 Networks, both networks must be on the same Network Creator Account. Please utilize our Network Transfer request form to get both Networks on the same account before requesting a migration.

How Will I Decide When To Upgrade?

Is your community ready for a makeover? Do your members live an on the go lifestyle and log in from their mobile devices? Have you been anxiously waiting for the moment when you can add a second or third blog and architect unique member experiences by applying multiple privacy and contributor settings to custom pages and features? Are you ready to take advantage of the “super” Groups feature that was released on Ning 3.0?

The best way to decide when to migrate is to look over the lists of Features that will and will not migrate and determine which of your existing features are necessary for your revamped network. A network that relies heavily on Events, for example, would be best waiting until later stages of migration. A network that primarily utilizes Groups, Blogs, and Forums may be ready to move now.

Features That Will Migrate

Features That Will Not Migrate

Sure, change is difficult, but then there’s that old adage of grabbing the bull by the horns. No matter which phase you opt into, the Ning Advocacy team and Creators community will be here to support you.

What About…

My Domain Name

If you are using a custom domain name, you will be able to transfer the custom domain name in a few simple steps. If your community is operating with a ning.com subdomain (e.g., yourning2.ning.com), you will be able to choose whether to keep your Ning 2.0 subdomain or change to you Ning 3.0 subdomain at the end of the migration process.

If you prefer to keep yourning3.ning.com as your community’s domain name, you are welcome to do so.

Members

My Sandbox Network has a dozen members. Will these profiles be replaced or deleted?
Existing member profiles will not be deleted. We will implement a check to determine any duplicate email addresses and map your member data accordingly.

Will you provide tools to identify and remove inactive members?
Yes. In Phases Two and Three, we will offer you the option to import all members or import only those members who have engaged with your community within the last 3, 6, 12, or 24 months. We will base this off of a reliable value such as last visit or last update to the member profile. (Please note that filtering capabilities will not be available during Phase One.)

What happens to the content created by members that have been removed?
If you choose to not migrate a member for any reason (e.g., inactive), then we will create a stub member account (sort of like a suspended member account) to tie their content to. Any discussions, replies, photos, groups, and videos belonging that member will be imported and will be linked to the stub member account.

Member Categories
Member Categories will transfer in every phase of the upgrade process. It’s good to note that moderator roles are not yet supported in Ning 3.0. We do plan to support the transfer of moderator roles when they become available.

Suspended Members
During the import, you may choose to import all or just a few of the following member types: Active, Invited, Pending, Suspended, or Left (content not deleted). If a community member has left and the content remains, in Phase One, the content will be attached to the Network Creator’s profile. In later Phases, we will create a “stub” account based on the email address in the event that this member rejoins your network at a later date. (Please note that filtering capabilities will not be available during the Phase One.)

“Likes”
Each content item has its own set of “Network Likes” which will be imported with the content item. A record of the “Likes” on your profile page will be retained, however it will not be possible to import a list of all the content you have “liked” or “favorited” on the network.

My Friends
Friends (including requests sent and received) will carry over.

Profile Questions

You will have the option to import profile questions and answers from your existing Ning 2.0 Network. Selecting this option will wipe out any profile questions and answers on an already created Ning 3.0 Network.

You may also choose not to import these profile questions and answers and instead generate new profile information from questions on the Ning 3.0 Network. If you select this option, any information posted to a member’s profile will not transfer over to the Ning 3.0 Network. To repopulate their profiles, members would have to edit their profile pages and add this information again manually.

Messages

Messages will be imported as usual and message history will include sent and archived messages as well as your inbox.

Forum Discussions

The Forum will be imported into your Ning 3.0 Network as a new, unpublished Forum in the unlinked section of Site & Pages. Forum discussions will retain their original categories, tags, replies (threaded or flat), attachments, and metadata.

The default viewer and contributor type will be set to Members, the default comment type will be standard and set to allow HTML. Excerpt length will match what is set on the Main Page Forum Widget, and content approval will be turned off for this feature. We will preserve URL structure by defaulting the path type for each feature to match its Ning 2.0 equivalent (e.g., /forum/topics/). This will minimize any negative impact to SEO and should help to reduce member confusion.

During later phases, the Network Creator may be able to specify which types of content are imported (e.g., only import discussions that have been replied to within the last 3, 6, 12 months).

Blog Posts

The Blog will be imported into your Ning 3.0 Network as a new, unpublished Blog in the unlinked section of Site & Pages. The default viewer and contributor type will be set to Members, the default comment type will be standard and set to allow HTML. Excerpt length will match what is set on the Main Page Blog Widget, and content approval will be turned off for this feature. We will preserve URL structure by defaulting the path type for each feature to match its Ning 2.0 equivalent (e.g., /profiles/blogs/). This will minimize any negative impact to SEO and should help to reduce member confusion.

During later phases, the Network Creator may control how private blog posts are migrated (e.g., if blogs are marked as ‘visible to friends only’ the NC may choose to import these as public blog posts or not import them at all).

Blog posts will retain their original tags, comments, and metadata. During the later phases, it may be possible to convert tags to categories and place tagged blog posts within a particular category.

Photos

Photos will be imported into a new Photo feature instance at /photo. The default settings for this feature instance will be unpublished, viewer and contributor set to Members, approve content will not be turned on, comments will be standard with HTML allowed and the newest comment displayed on top.

In later phases, the Network Creator may control how private photos are migrated (e.g., if photos are marked as ‘visible to friends only’ the NC may choose to import these as public photos or not import them at all).

Photos will retain their original tags, comments, and metadata. Photo Album names could be added as a tag to photos within that album. During Phase Two, it may be possible to convert tags to categories and place tagged photos within that category.

Videos

Videos will not be included in the initial phase of the upgrade process. Once the Video feature is developed, Videos will be imported into a new Video feature instance at /video. The default settings for this feature instance will be unpublished, viewer and contributor set to Members, approve content will not be turned on, comments will be standard with HTML allowed and the newest comment displayed on top. Videos will retain their original tags, comments, and metadata.

Music

Music is not a supported feature in Ning 3.0 and will not be imported as part of the upgrade process. You may choose to copy playlists and recreate them using a third-party service provider like SoundCloud or Spotify, then embed the widget in a blog, HTML module, forum discussion, or your own profile page

Comments

Comments on features including profile pages, photos, videos, blog posts, and forum discussions will transfer.

Pages

Pages will be imported as new, unpublished full-width Custom Pages and will retain their same URL path and viewer settings (e.g., admin, public, draft) as well as likes. In later phases, Network Creators will be provided with filters to select specific pages (e.g., only import Pages created within the last 3, 6, 12, 24 months).

Custom Code

Any CSS and custom code will be left alone. We have chosen not to transfer custom code including CSS and JavaScript because Ning 3.0 is designed in CSS3 and HTML5 and uses a different grid structure, which enables its responsive design. If your network is reliant on CSS, many of those strings will need to be updated because once transferred, they will refer to a CSS class or ID that no longer exists. To update any existing CSS, please refer to Commonly Used CSS Classes, which maps some of the more common Ning 2.0 and Ning 3.0 CSS classes.

The File Manager

Our current plan is to clone and import the File Manager in its entirety. However, if you have pages in the file manager that are set as splash pages or default landing pages, these should be to be copied and pasted into new custom pages in the 3.0 Social Site Manager.

My Ning 2.0 Community

What Will Happen to My Ning 2.0 Community After Everything Has Transferred?
After all possible content and members have been imported to your new Ning 3.0 community and your domain has been swapped, the subscription for your Ning 2.0 Network will be automatically canceled. We strongly suggest archiving your Ning 2.0 Network so that you have a backup of all its content. Any remaining balance on your Ning 2.0 subscription will be credited back to your account and applied to the subscription fees for your Ning 3.0 Network.

Will I need to choose a new subscription plan?
Yes. Your member count will determine which subscription plan will be selected for your network. When you upgrade a Ning 2.0 Network, membership limits for your Ning 3.0 subscription plan will be doubled from the general member limits (up to 2,000 for Basic; 20,000 for Performance; and 200,000 for Ultimate). Please note: Doubled member limits will not be available during Phase One of migration. If you will need to take advantage of this, we advise waiting until a later Phase. Update March 2014: Doubled Member Limits are now supported in all migrations.

How Will I Choose My New Subscription Plan?
Member limits will be doubled for any Ning 2.0 Network that upgrades to Ning 3.0. An appropriate plan should be selected for your Ning 3.0 community based upon how many members are transferred. Please note: Doubled member limits will not be available during Phase One of migration. If you will need to take advantage of this, we advise waiting until a later Phase. Update March 2014: Doubled Member Limits are now supported in all migrations.

My Account Balance

We will credit any remaining balance for your Ning 2.0 subscription back to your account, which you can check by logging into your account Ning.com. This credit will be automatically applied toward your new Ning 3.0 subscription.

What Content Will Transfer

Your community is a beehive of activity. We’re excited to capture the years of creativity and content for you, and re-present it on the mobile-ready canvas of Ning 3.0. Check the Help Center Article for the most recent information.

What Content Will Not Transfer

When at all possible, existing content will be carried over to the Ning 3.0 version of your community. However, content that is linked to the unsupported features below will not transfer. You may wish to manually transfer this content as necessary. Check the Help Center Article for the most recent information.

  • Media uploaded to the Music feature
  • Language files
  • Language edits made using the Language Editor
  • Virtual Gifts
  • Ning Apps
  • Historical Activity Feed content
  • Customization of a member’s individual profile page will not carryover including theme, layout, RSS, and Virtual Gift balance

Other Questions

Can I import two of my existing Ning 2.0 Networks into one Ning 3.0 Network?
Yes, it will be possible to import content from two existing Ning 2.0 Networks into on Ning 3.0 Network.
Each feature you import, for example blog A and blog B, will create a new blog A and blog B on your 3.0 Network. One thing to keep in mind is that you would have to commit to one subdomain–it would not be possible for both blogs to retain their same URL structure.

Won’t all this imported content clog my Activity Feed?
Freshly imported content and member profiles will not generate new activity in the Activity Feed.

What if the upgrade process is incomplete?
The most important thing to note is that your Ning 2.0 Network will be unaffected. If the upgrade process is incomplete, fails, or is canceled by Ning or the Network Creator, we will be able to roll back or restart the importer tools as necessary. Content validation checks are in place to match the total number of items imported by feature and ensure 100% of your content and members carryover to the Ning 3.0 community. Since most features generate new pages, you can always delete these new pages if necessary.

What is “topping off”?
For larger networks, the import process may take some time. During this time, new content may be added to your Ning 2.0 Network. To ensure all this activity is captured, we will provide you with the ability to “top off” the new network with any content that has been added since the last import. This includes new comments and likes made on existing content like blogs and photos as well as new content items like blog posts and forum discussions.
